Looking to celebrate this Independence Day with some red, white, and blue cocktails? We've got you covered.
Red: Doctor Funk #2
Mix together the following ingredients:
- 1 1/2 oz. dark Jamaican rum
- 1/2 oz. falernum
- 3/4 oz. grenadine
- 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
- 1 dash absinthe
- 1 dash bitters
Shake with ice and pour into a tall glass. Throw in some maraschino cherries to up the red factor for the holiday. Top off with soda water and garnish with a lime wedge.
This is one of our favorite gin drinks. It's quite possible this is because I feel like I have a weird connection with F. Scott Fitzgerald (Long Island, Princeton, two family dogs that are both coincidentally named Gatsby, we lived on the same block in West Hollywood, 5th reunion at college was Gatsby themed...). But all of our guests have agreed, this is kind of the alcoholic version of Sprite.
- 1 1/2 oz. gin
- 1 oz. simple syrup
- 3/4 oz. fresh lemon juice
- 2 dashes bitters
Shake with ice and strain into a chilled old-fashioned glass. Add a lemon wedge.
Blue: Blue Hawaiian
Not to be confused with the Blue Hawaii, which is a vodka drink.
Combine the following ingredients:
- 1 oz. light Puerto Rican rum
- 1 oz. blue curaçao
- 1 oz. cream of coconut
- 2 oz. pineapple juice
Mix all ingredients with ice in a blender at a high speed. Pour into a chilled highball glass (or a Shag Blue Hawaiian glass, if you've got one). Garnish with a pineapple and a cherry (or a blue umbrella).
All cocktails have originated from Mr. Boston Official Bartender's Guide. Some have been modified slightly.
Now go mix these up and enjoy at a BBQ or while watching the fireworks! Bonus points if you've got appropriately colored swizzle sticks or drink umbrellas on hand.
