Now that the weather is finally getting a little cooler in sunny Southern California and the holidays are just around the corner, we've been in the mood for some warm tiki drinks. To get us in the spirit for Thanksgiving and the fast-approaching Christmas season, we brewed up some Hot Rum Cider Punch. Warm up some of your own for a cozy night at home or for your next holiday shindig! Cheers!
In order to make 4 servings (or 2 tiki-mug sized servings), you're going to need the following ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cup plain apple cider (not spiced)
- 2 tsp. sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- Whole cloves
- 1/2 an orange, cut into wedges
- 1 cup pineapple juice (an 8.45 oz can works too)
- 3/4 cup dark rum (we used Myer's)
- (Optional) dash of ground nutmeg
Start by combining the following in a saucepan: cider, sugar, cinnamon stick, and, if you have it on hand, a dash of nutmeg. Once the liquid comes to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
While your cider mixture is warming up, cut up 1/2 of an orange into wedges. Then insert cloves into the rind of each wedge. As soon as you've completed this step, add the orange wedges to the cider mixture on the stove.
After the cider mixture has been simmering for 20 minutes, add in the pineapple juice and dark rum. Heat until the punch starts to bubble. Then, time to serve!
Ladle the punch into a cup of your choosing. Make sure it's equipped for warm drinks (our personal preference is a tiki mug). Now you just have to sit back and enjoy this spiced, fruity, fall beverage!
If you don't plan on serving your Hot Rum Cider Punch right away or if you plan on serving it at a party, remove the orange wedges after the 20 minutes listed above in Step 3. Otherwise, the whole thing could get a little too clovey while it's waiting to be consumed!
