Looking Back on a Very Tiki 2016

The year is about to come to a close and we can't wait to ring in 2017 at one of our favorite tiki bars, the Tonga Hut. Over the past week, we've been busy developing a detailed game plan for the year to come. With an open slate for 2017, we're excited to set new goals for our blog content and upcoming product line. Before we jump to our hopes for the coming year, let's take a look back at the past 12 months.

This year we managed to cross two big items off the list: we got married AND we finished our Grog Logs. While much of our time was spent wedding planning (& budgeting), we managed to make it out to Walt Disney World, Palm Springs, Big Sur, and Las Vegas and we visited at least seven(!) new tiki bars! We also continued to build and evolve our blog while making many new friends along the way. Want to know which of our posts were most popular this year? Let's countdown the top 10 for 2016!

When it came time to plan our wedding, there was no doubt about one thing: it was going to be tiki-themed. Once we started crunching numbers, we quickly realized that it was also going to have to be as DIY as possible. Since we're both creative people, we embraced our big day as one giant design challenge. In the end, everything came together in one fun, tropical-filled event that we were happy to share with our closest friends and family members. Now, we can't wait to share it with you - check it out!

Last time we were strolling around our local Target, we couldn't help but notice the fun, tropical offerings we saw in the kids' home decor section. We don't have kids (yet) but we decided we wanted to look further into what this whole Pillowfort collection was all about. Turns out, it features some super colorful, tiki-esque designs that we almost (or definitely) want to buy for ourselves. Whether you've got kids in need of some new decor or you're just into imaginative, cheerful accents, it's worth checking this stuff out!

In early 2015, we were able to experience an amazing evening at the Coconut Club (LA's "underground" tiki supper club that pops up from time to time and is almost always sold out). It was a 3-hour tropical getaway with multiple courses for dinner and stunning cocktails that accompanied our meals. Because we enjoyed our first experience so much, we were excited to see that the Coconut Club had begun offering shorter form events (at a lower price point). We just had to check it out and, in the end, we left with our thirsts quenched while feeling happily full & very appreciative of the tiki escape. Want to know all the details? Here's how we spent our night at the Coconut Club this past August...

Just last month, False Idol made its debut in San Diego. Once we heard that Martin Cate (of Smuggler's Cove fame) was one of the co-owners, we were super excited to check it out. We managed to snag a reservation on a weeknight so we made the trek down to San Diego from LA to see if it lived up to all of the hype we'd been hearing. From the decor to the service to the drinks, we're happy to say that False Idol is an extremely solid addition to the Southern California tiki scene.

Here's what our top photos on Instagram looked like as well. It's always fun to see a colorful summary filled with so many fun tiki memories!

As we look toward the new year, we've set a few goals for ourselves:

  • Continue to evolve our mixology skills and feature more of our own tiki drink recipes on the site
  • Stick to a more consistent blogging schedule (this was also a goal for 2016...oops...but this time around we have a year-long content plan)
  • Finally launch the tropical and mid-century themed product line we've had in mind for 2+ years now

We can't wait to see what 2017 has in store and we have hope that the future will be bright.

To all of our readers, thanks for making this year a great one! We've had so much fun sharing it with all of you! Let's see if 2017 can top it. : )

Cheers!
Kelsi & Greg
